Strides Entrance and Continuation Criteria
The Strides Day Program provides high-quality education, training, and support to adults with intellectual disabilities. We aim to empower them to achieve their independence, work readiness, and employment goals. We believe in providing age-appropriate education, respect, personal choice, and community inclusion. Classes are held at the adult school, integrated with non-disabled individuals and in community locations. Admission and continued enrollment are based on meeting specific requirements. Please review the criteria that are expected of all-day program students:

General - The particpant must

I understand
Have a primary diagnosis of Intellectual Disability (Autism, Down’s syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Fetal Alcohol syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, or Cerebral Palsy with cognitive impairment) and qualify for Regional Center of the East Bay services.
Be at least 22 years of age and exited from a high school transition program, or 18 and graduated with a high school diploma or GED and have a goal of employment.
Express interest in participating in the program and desire increased socialization.
Demonstrate the ability to benefit from the program.
Be able to navigate on an adult school campus independently.
Attendance - The participant must

Attend 90% of scheduled program days.
Communicate absences to the school at the time of the absence.
Provide a doctor’s note for illnesses lasting more than three days.
Attend the summer session.
Communicate any leaves and vacations not planned during regular school breaks, understanding that continued enrollment is not guaranteed.
Participation - The participant must

Be willing and able to participate independently on campus and in community-based activities with a staff-to-student ratio of 1:8 without needing individual ongoing assistance.
Follow simple, two to three-step directions and be responsive to instruction.
Be able to communicate personal needs and wants clearly.
Be able to orient to various environments, including different classrooms, working with diverse staff, and activities in the community.
Be comfortable in a large group setting of 80 students and program staff.

Behavior - The participant must

Maintain appropriate behavior for an adult school campus, not be disruptive to the learning environment, and not physically endanger oneself or others.
Manage any mild behavior and emotional problems in both small and large group settings.
Be willing to comply with a positive behavior support plan/contract if necessary.
Have NO history of violent or criminal behavior.
Have NO history of wandering away from supervision.
Have No history of substance abuse issues.
Be willing to see an onsite school counselor or outside counseling if recommended by staff.
Medical - The participant must

Adhere to all District, State, County, and Department of Developmental Services health mandates and guidelines.
Submit a medical report, immunization records, and TB clearance completed by a physician every two years.
Be medically stable and physically able to participate in all program activities, including community outings, with no undue risk to self, as determined by a physician.
Manage medication and medical needs independently and without prompting.
Be continent and able to attend to own personal needs and toileting.
Operate a wheelchair or walker independently.
Care Providers - Care providers must

Submit all legal documents if the individual has a Power of Attorney or is conserved.
Provide the necessary home and agency support needed for successful program participation.
Complete and return all required paperwork by the due date as requested by the program.

Exit Criteria
Our program's exit criteria are designed to respect the unique needs and circumstances of our participants. A participant may exit the program if it no longer meets their needs (as determined by their ID Team), if they choose to leave, or if they can no longer effectively participate or benefit from our services due to various factors. When it is determined that the program cannot meet a participant's needs, we commit to giving at least thirty days' notice to the participant, their family, care providers, and case manager, to ensure a smooth and informed transition. Factors aiding in this determination include:

Moving out of the area.
Demonstrating that continued participation would jeopardize the individual's health and safety.
Requiring a staff-to-participant ratio such that it denies other individuals their right to program services.
Having a prohibitive medical condition that no longer allows the individual to attend the program or renders the program ineffective for the individual.
Cannot navigate the adult school campus independently, including going from class to class and taking care of toileting needs.
Threatening the health and safety of others.
Unwilling or unable to participate in community-based activities without needing individual assistance.
Displaying behaviors that are not compatible with accepted standards of conduct in the community.
Exhibiting behaviors that are disruptive of program activities as deserving of discharge from the program if not corrected, namely (a) consistently poor hygiene, (b) abuse of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs during program hours, and (c) threatening injury to others or property.
Exhibiting excessive, unexcused absenteeism.
Refusing to cooperate with the program's implementation of their Individual Program Plan.
Immediate Dismissal
The participant will be subject to immediate dismissal from the program if the:

Participant or their care providers decline or are unwilling to collaborate in implementing the Individual Program Plan.
Participant abuses alcoholic or illegal drugs during program hours.
Participant's behavior may lead to harm of oneself or others.
Participant's health conditions change, which makes them unsuitable for services.
Re-enrolling
Participants who voluntarily exit the program may apply to return, but re-enrollment is not guaranteed. They must go through the intake process again to ensure they meet entrance criteria and may be subject to a waitlist.
